What does it mean to say Jesus is the King of kings? What does it mean for Him to be the King of your life?
Lately, these are questions I’ve been reflecting on during my prayer times. I often preach that Jesus is our King and Lord—that He is worthy of our lives and praise. But when I come before Him in prayer, I can’t help but feel that, at times, I’ve made God second—or even third—in my life.
Why is it so difficult to keep Jesus at the center? I think it’s because what we see with our eyes so easily becomes first in our hearts. When we’re worried about the future, concerned for our children, or facing issues in our families, those things naturally occupy our minds. On top of that, there are endless things vying for our attention. It’s so easy to pick up our phones or lose ourselves in another show that numbs and distracts us.
As I prayed recently and confessed, “Jesus, You are my everything,” I felt convicted by the things that still fill my heart. I know how quickly I can numb myself with another video or scroll. I know how easily my heart wanders. The danger is that we can grow numb—giving Jesus only part of ourselves, and over time, that becomes normal. We rely on God’s grace, but we don’t let Jesus take more of us.
Imagine being married and telling your spouse, “I love you,” but then saying, “99% of my heart is yours, but I’ve saved 1% for my first love.” That wouldn’t be true love—it would be a divided heart. And I’m pretty sure I’d be sleeping on the couch that night.
If we say we love Jesus with all our hearts, but reserve part of our love for other things, is that true devotion? In prayer, the Lord often reveals the things pulling my heart away from Him. And in His grace, I’m reminded again to lay those things down, and to confess: Jesus, You are my one true King.
Let us boldly confess that Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords. He is worthy of it all. Let’s give Him our whole hearts and our whole lives.
Amen.
