Practicing Gratitude as a Way of Life
Devotional Reflection
In one of my classes in school, we are learning to do different types of practices for our spiritual well being. We’ve tried breathing techniques, mindfulness exercises, and this week we focused on gratitude.
At first, I thought some of these practices were a little silly. When we think about breathing exercises, we usually picture yoga and all the different poses. But over time, I found myself doing them more often—especially when I felt anxious. Taking a step back to focus on my breath has brought a calming presence into my spiritual walk.
The church has developed all kinds of practices that can strengthen our relationship with God. One example is Lectio Divina—reading Scripture slowly, reflecting on it, and sitting in silence with God’s word. Another is the prayer of examen, developed by Saint Ignatius. It walks you through five steps of prayer to help you review your day and surrender it to the Lord.
This week we practiced gratitude—intentionally reflecting on what we are thankful for in our lives. Did you know that scientific studies show people who practice gratitude tend to be healthier? It’s funny how science often confirms what the Bible has already said. Who knew that being thankful could be a key to long life and good health?
The Apostle Paul writes to the Thessalonians,
"Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
(1 Thessalonians 5:18)
It is God’s will for us to learn thanksgiving. When we do not overlook the small things, we begin to see that everything is a gift.
It is a blessing to wake up this morning.
It is a blessing to have our health.
It is a blessing to have a roof over our heads and food on the table.
We often neglect these blessings and instead focus on what we lack. But when we pause to remember all that we have, it grounds us. It keeps us from reacting to every difficulty and helps us be more present with the people around us.
Sometimes we feel overwhelmed. But sometimes all it takes is a simple reminder—we are deeply blessed.
Prayer
Lord, help us to be thankful for all that You have done.
Teach us to give thanks in all things, not just when it is easy.
Help us to practice gratitude, especially for the greatest gift of all—knowing You and Jesus Christ.
Amen.
